Sea buckthorn (from the Latin Hippóphaë) belongs to the genus of plants from the Sucker family, or Elaeagnaceae. Ripe berries and leaves of this plant are widely used not only for the preparation of various preparations and dishes, they are very in demand for medicinal purposes. The timely and correct harvesting is a guarantee of obtaining high-quality raw materials.

Harvest Dates

The correct determination of the timing of the collection of sea buckthorn is very important to facilitate the laborious work and the maximum preservation of all nutrients in the berry. To determine which month to collect and how to carry out the event, It is necessary to determine the varietal features:

  • the early varieties should be harvested in early August, but it is better to harvest the Chuyskaya berries in late summer;
  • later varieties are ready for harvest from the second half of the first autumn month.

Nevertheless, the most accurate harvest dates may vary depending on weather and soil-climatic conditions in the region where the berry crop is grown. The first sign of the beginning of the collection is the acquisition of intense and characteristic coloration by the berries. The fully ripened berries are tight, but differ in a fairly easy separation. It is at this stage that the optimum amount of vitamin C is observed in the berries. If the purpose of using the berry is to obtain sea buckthorn oil, then it is recommended to delay its collection and wait for the so-called over-ripening of the crop on the tree.

How to collect sea buckthorn

Quick collection methods

Before harvesting, remember that sea buckthorn juice can ruin clothing, so raincoats should be used. Berry picking is carried out from the crown of the branches to the bottom. To conduct this event not only quickly, but also efficiently, it is recommended to use special devices. Today, gardeners practice the following methods of harvesting sea buckthorn:

  • The easiest way is to carefully cut branches with berries from the plant and then freeze it, making it easy to take the crop. The disadvantage of this method is the unsuitability of frozen berries for juice or jam.
  • The classic method of manual collection is widely used. Despite the fact that in this case the berries are suitable for any kind of processing, this method is too labor-intensive and time-consuming.

If frost occurs during the morning hours of sea buckthorn, then to collect the berries, lay a dense canvas under the tree, on which frosty berries will fall off as a result of blows on the branches. As a rule, in our country, manual harvesting is used, as well as the use of various devices that facilitate and accelerate the harvest.

Convenient fixtures

In small areas of sea buckthorn, it is advisable to collect manually or using tongs, which do not damage the berries and the plant. However, a few, but quite affordable and effective folk inventions make it possible to make sea buckthorn collection not only quick and easy, but also very high quality, with minimal loss of berry's market value.

The following devices for picking berries belong to the category of the most common and convenient for use in home gardening:

  • A variety of combs intended for "combing" ripe berries on the fabric spread under the berry culture.
  • Wire cobramade of thin, but sufficiently strong steel, with the addition of a convenient wooden handle (the wire should be bent loops, and then fixed to the handle). Such a simple device easily cuts the stalks even in areas of the crown that are difficult to access for manual collection.
  • Is popular tin can 10 cm long and 3-4 mm in diameter larger than the size of the berry. Such a tube must be wrapped with ordinary insulating tape and fixed on a plastic bag. As a result of the cutting movement, the berry is cut off from the stalk and moves through the tube into a bag.
  • A special method of collection is used if necessary to obtain sea buckthorn juice. In this case, a sufficiently wide container should be substituted under the branches with berries, and then, holding the branches down with the hand from the base down, the berries should be squeezed. As a result, juice flows from a ripe berry and fills the container. It takes about an hour to collect three liters of juice.

Terms and conditions of storage of the crop

After harvest, sea buckthorn berries can be preserved in several ways. The most commonly picked berries are laid out in bags and placed in a freezer, where they retain all their beneficial properties for six months. In the future, berries can be used for some types of processing.

Another fairly common way to store sea buckthorn is to put freshly picked and unwashed berries in jars. Berries should be poured with cooled boiled water, covered with lids and stored in a refrigerator. From fresh sea buckthorn, you can make mashed berry or jelly, jam or jam.

Recently, dried sea buckthorn has gained popularity. Berries can be dried, pre-treated with a soda solution and washed with running water. They should be spread out in a uniform layer and dried in direct sunlight for about three to four weeks. Artificial drying is also allowed - in the oven or in a special dryer. Berries prepared in this way must be placed in a wooden or cardboard container, on the bottom of which thick sheets of paper should be laid.

Follow-up care for sea buckthorn

After harvesting, sea buckthorn trees need to carry out activities such as removing weeds and leaves in near-stem circles, followed by shallow loosening of the soil. When loosening, care should be taken, since the root system of the berry culture is classified as superficial.

Sea buckthorn: features and care

The depth of cultivation should not be more than five centimeters. In addition, high-quality water-charging irrigation and mulching should be carried out. If necessary, sanitary pruning is carried out with the processing of the cut sections by standard garden var. As a rule, in central Russia, plants do not need shelter and winter well under the snow cover.
